The City Engineer is responsible for all major capital improvements at the City including roads, bridges, sanitary sewers, water lines, storm drains and culverts, traffic control projects, and improvement to the water treatment and wastewater treatment plants.

The City Engineer is responsible for maintaining and update the map of the City including annexations and current zoning information. Information on flood plains, location of the main water lines, sanitary sewers (including a limited number of tap records), storm water conveyances, vacated alleys, and public right-of-ways are also available at the office of the City Engineer.

The City Engineer is responsible for the issuance of building and sign permits. Permit requirements and fees are as follows. Cash or checks issued to the City of Cambridge are acceptable for payment of all permit and application fees.
