The City of Cambridge owns and maintains three cemeteries within the City of Cambridge.
The Founders Cemetery, located on Southgate Parkway, at the top of the Southgate Bridge, is on the corner of Southgate and Turner Avenue. This is the oldest cemetery in Cambridge. It was platted in 1806 by Zaccheus A. Beatty and Joseph Gomber, when they laid out the town of Cambridge, Ohio. As the settlement grew, additional land was acquired in 1833 and again in 1858. This last parcel was called the South Cemetery but was later renamed the Old City Cemetery and is located on the west side of S. 11th Street. Interments are no longer conducted at Founders Cemetery or the City Cemetery.
Northwood Cemetery, located on the North end of North 10th Street, opened in 1899 and covers just under 100 acres. In 2003, a 224 crypt, 124 niche mausoleum, which includes an inside chapel, was built just off of the N. 10th Street entrance. Interments are still conducted in both Northwood cemetery and the mausoleum.
The Founder’s Cemetery is accessible off of Southgate Parkway. The City Cemetery is accessible off of S. 11th Street, behind the Guthrie Insurance office and is open during daylight hours. The North 10th Street entrance of Northwood Cemetery is open 24 hours; all other entrances are open between the hours of 7:00 am and 3:00 pm, Monday thru Friday.
While the burial records for Northwood Cemetery are current and up to date, unfortunately, the records for Founder’s and the City Cemetery are not as complete. To obtain burial information, or a map of Northwood, you can access the links and information below. To obtain information for either Founder’s or the City Cemetery, you may contact the cemetery office at the phone number listed to schedule an appointment to view the records.
Foreman James Green and his staff, Tom Bishard and Skip Wetherell maintain all three cemeteries year round.
